Patience remains the key for head coach Rick Stone, as the Huddersfield Giants edge ever closer to finally signing Jake Mamo.
They say good things come to those who wait. However, after months of speculation, Giants’ fans could be forgiven for reaching boiling point with the ongoing Jake Mamo saga. (Or maybe losing interest altogether.)
As recently as mid-November, The Daily Telegraph‘s Barry Toohey was reporting that Mamo was expected to finalise a deal with the Giants. And yet here we are, into December, with still no sign of his arrival in Huddersfield.
One of the reasons for the holdup, is likely connected to the Newcastle Knights’ attempts to sign Kayln Ponga. The teenage star is still working on gaining an early release from his current club, the North Queensland Cowboys.
In that respect, the Knights theoretically have the power to hold onto Mamo, who is under contract with them for next season. This all puts the Giants in a precarious situation, with the departures of Jake Connor and Scott Grix highlighting their desperate need for a fullback.
However, Stone remains hopeful that the matter will be resolved. Speaking recently to Chris Roberts of The Huddersfield Examiner, he said: “I’d say the possibility of a deal is still alive.
“I’ve made no secret of the fact I’d like to bring him to the club, and he’s interested in coming, which is a good thing. And at the age of 22 he’d be good for us – he’s a young, hungry player, and still has plenty to prove in his career.”
However, this means trying to persuade the team Stone previously coached, to release Mamo: “If we could eventually get to the stage where we could get (the) Newcastle Knights to make that happen, that would be good.”
One thing that helps, is Cowboys coach Paul Green recently admitting he’s resigned to losing Ponga. For now though, it’s probably best if Giants fans concentrate on other things, including this Saturday’s Giants Beer Fest.
